THE MOSAIC LAB fellowship

In 2021, IWES kicked off a new film-based initiative, the Mosaic Lab, a fellowship for young men in New Orleans to explore gender and masculinity through media. The 9 Fellows participated in workshops and discussions where they spoke about what gender and masculinity mean to them, and we filmed some of those conversations and compiled them into a short film below entitled No One Ever Tells You Why. Additionally, the Fellows were featured in billboards around New Orleans in Summer 2023.

finally, the fellows brainstormed the themes and plot for a narrative short film, so Check back in for the release to see what topic they chose and how it all came to life on film!

“To be honest, it wasn’t really a man who taught me how to be a man. It was my older sister.”

- Rance

“We can undo toxic masculinity if people started becoming more open to people’s ideas and open to criticism.”

- Jordan

“It’s usually only cis-hetero men in this conversation. It doesn’t speak for all men. It only speaks for one small part.” - Javonne
